What to do about hair loss?

Hair loss is not a rare phenomenon: In Germany, about 80 percent of men are affected by hereditary hair loss. But even women can run out of hair. Fortunately, you can do a lot against hair loss today. It is important first that the cause of the complaints is found. Subsequently, a corresponding treatment can take place. Often, the active ingredients finasteride or Minoxidil be used. It is also often attempted to tackle hair loss with home remedies. That these are actually effective, however, has not yet been scientifically proven.

Forms of hair loss in men and women

For hair loss, a distinction must be made between different forms. The most common is genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). He mainly works for men. The cause is an increasing sensitivity to the sex hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Typically, initially so-called receding hairline, later it comes to hair loss in Tonsurbereich.

With diffuse hair loss, hair becomes thinner all over the head. The causes include psychological stress, lack of nutrients, hormonal disorders or changes, iron deficiency, metabolic disorders and the use of certain medications.

In circular hair loss (alopecia areata) form at various points of the head circular, bald spots. Cause is probably an autoimmune reaction of the body against the hair follicles.

Shampoos, tablets and hair tonic

If you run out of hair, you should always first contact a dermatologist. This can determine the cause and recommend you if appropriate a suitable therapy against the hair loss. If, for example, a nutritional deficiency is the cause, the symptoms can usually be treated relatively easily and uncomplicated.

If the hair loss is genetically determined, various treatment methods are also available. However, most of the time the medication has to be used over a longer period of time until a result is achieved. In addition, the hair loss can only be stopped by the means, but not remedy. If the medication is discontinued, the hair loss usually returns.

Finasteride stops the hair loss

Finasteride is an active ingredient that was initially used to treat benign prostate enlargement. Since some patients improved their hair growth, their own anti-hair loss products were developed.

Finasteride ensures that dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is not converted to its active form by blocking the responsible enzyme. Because hereditary hair loss is based on increasing sensitivity to DHT, hair loss can be stopped this way. Sometimes the hair of the head thickens again through the use of the remedy.

Minoxidil and 17α-estradiol

Similar to Finasteride, Minoxidil was initially used not for hair loss but for hypertension. When an increased hair growth was discovered as a side effect, also here own preparations against hair loss were developed. The product is applied directly to the scalp in the form of a tincture - minoxidil tablets are only suitable for the treatment of hypertension.

Products containing 17α-estradiol can be used in both men and women against hereditary hair loss. The active ingredient, like Finasteride, ensures that testosterone is not converted to DHT. 17α-Estradiol is usually used in the form of hair tinctures, possible side effects are itching and redness.

What to do against circular and diffuse hair loss?

For diffuse hair loss, it is important to find the cause of the ailments and to treat them. For example, if the hair loss is caused by a thyroid disorder, this disorder should be treated. The same applies to other causes such as a lack of nutrients or mental stress.

In the case of circular hair loss, the hair follicles remain intact, in contrast to hereditary hair loss. This makes it possible to reverse the process of hair loss. However, the therapy in this area is not yet mature. In mild cases, zinc and glucocorticoids can help alleviate the discomfort.

Home remedies for hair loss

Against hair loss, there are several home remedies that supposedly stop hair loss. However, most of these methods are not scientifically proven. However, if you wish, you can still try one of the following home remedies to help you.

  • zinc
  • Fenugreek
  • Spirulina algae

In addition to taking these funds, it should also be helpful to wash the hair regularly with coconut oil. But do not forget to rinse the oil thoroughly afterwards! In addition, garlic juice and a mixture of sage and apple cider vinegar are said to have a stimulating effect on hair growth.

Hair transplantation and toupee

With hereditary hair loss, a hair transplant can counteract hair loss. Since the hair follicles on the back of the head are insensitive to testosterone, tissue pieces are transferred from the back of the head to the bald areas. However, such an intervention is often relatively expensive. In addition, the result is sometimes less natural than if the original hair is prevented from precipitating by minoxidil or finasteride.

If a hair transplant is out of the question, you can also think about making an artificial hair replacement. Wigs and toupees are now in good quality - with some you can even go swimming. If wig and toupee are not an option for you, a short haircut can also help to mask hair loss.
