Remove the cornea: That's how it works!

Cornea protects our hands and feet from pressure and friction. Despite its important function, cornea is often considered ugly and removed. When removing the firm skin layers, however, you can do a lot wrong. We reveal how to remove your cornea properly and which home remedies are particularly effective. In addition, we give you valuable tips to prevent the formation of calluses.

Cornea on hands and feet

Callus develops primarily on the hands or feet. Especially on the feet, wearing unsuitable footwear as well as standing or walking often results in unsightly calluses. These are especially common in the bale or heel area.

A thin layer of the cornea on the hands and feet is quite normal, as the firm layers of the skin protect sensitive areas from pressure and friction. However, if too much cornea is formed, it can cause pain. In addition, as a result, corns and inflammation may occur.

Wrong footwear as a cause

For the emergence of cornea various causes come into question. On the feet but especially wearing false footwear plays a crucial role. Because the shoe does not fit properly, it has an increased pressure on the skin. Due to this, the cornea is increasingly formed at the loaded site.

Avoid shoes that are too narrow or too pointed. Even shoes with a high heel and a very thin or very hard shoe soles should be avoided as far as possible. The same applies to shoes that sit badly on the foot. Particularly important is a comfortable, well-fitting shoe for people who work a lot while walking or standing.

Overweight as a risk factor

In addition to wearing the wrong footwear, there are a number of other causes that can lead to the formation of calluses on the feet. These include deformations of the feet (for example, hammer toes). Due to the deformations, an increased pressure is applied to certain parts of the foot, which may lead to calluses.

In addition, too heavy a weight or a wrong gait can lead to excessive or one-sided stress on the foot. While increased weight may be associated with increased corneal formation, unilateral loading of the foot results in uneven corneal formation.

Finally, too dry feet can lead to unsightly calluses on the feet. Since there are no sebaceous glands on the underside of the foot, the skin dries out very quickly here and there is an increase in cornea formation. The lack of moisture can also cause painful cracks in the cornea. That is why it is important to cream your feet regularly.

Remove the cornea

There are several ways to remove unsightly calluses. If there is only a thin layer, the cornea can usually be easily removed with a foot file. First grate with the coarse side of the file, then smooth with the fine side. For best results, the file should be applied on dry feet and the feet then creamed.

If you like it soft and want to try something new, try a fish pedicure. The cornea is simply nibbled by small fish. That does not hurt, just tickle a bit at the most. However, such a treatment is slightly more expensive than a foot file: For a session, depending on the duration of about 15 to 30 euros to be scheduled.

Beware of callus rasps

With a slightly thicker layer of the cornea, a corneal rasp is often resorted to. This is similar to the foot file used: First, the rough side is the cornea rasped, then the fine side of the skin is smoothed.

However, the rasps are not without: Since they are very sharp, it can come even with small errors in the application to injuries of the skin. The same applies to electric corneal remover - also here there is an increased risk of injury. It is best to forego such devices and better resort to gentler methods.

If the cornea is very thick and cracked, make an appointment with a medical pedicure. Just cracked cornea should not be removed on its own, as germs can easily penetrate through the cracks in the tissue.

Salicylic acid fights calluses

There are many creams on the market that are said to have a corneal-reducing effect. Proven effective are products with salicylic acid - especially patches or solutions with highly concentrated salicylic acid. Although such products are available in every pharmacy, they are only conditionally suitable for domestic use. They are more in the hands of a podiatrist.

Whether you choose a salicylic acid product or you prefer to buy a foot file, be sure to remove only the top corneal layer. Otherwise, injury and damage may occur.

Remove cornea with home remedies

A pumice stone must not be missing in any household - but before you remove the cornea, you should take a foot bath. Optionally add some apple cider vinegar, chamomile, tea tree oil or aloe vera juice to the water. After soaking, you can simply rub away the top layer of cornea with the pumice stone. For persistent symptoms, you can additionally rub the hard spots several times a day with tea tree oil or apple cider vinegar.

Among the typical home remedies for the cornea is also the chamomile packet. Place a tablespoon of chamomile flowers on a linen cloth and wrap the flowers with the cloth. Then pour the packet over with a few tablespoons of boiling water, so that the cloth is completely soaked. Then press it for 15 minutes on the affected area. If the cornea has become soft, you can carefully remove it with a pumice stone.

Prevent the cornea

Our feet are heavily stressed every day, yet they are often neglected when being cared for. Often, they are given attention only when summer is around the corner. It can be prevented by the regular care of the feet of the formation of cornea. We give you six tips that will help you prevent the formation of calluses:

  • Cream your feet once or twice a day. Well suited are, for example, marigold ointment, deer's ointment or a urea-containing cream (urea).
  • Treat your feet to a foot bath at regular intervals. If the skin has become a little soft, you can easily remove hard skin layers with a pumice stone.
  • Wear only shoes with a perfect fit. In addition, change the shoes often - so the feet variety is offered.
  • Wear high-heeled shoes only on special occasions and not every day to work.
  • Spoil your feet from time to time with a relaxing massage.
  • Run often barefoot. Because walking barefoot strengthens the muscles, promotes blood circulation and increases the mobility of the toes.
