Skin Care: You have to pay attention!

Daily body care is a matter of course for most people. But how much care does the skin need? There is no such thing as a patent remedy. However, the fact is that any contact with water and cleansers deprives the skin of moisture and weakens its acid mantle. Frequent showering and bathing therefore carries the risk that the skin dries up and loses its elasticity.

The ideal skin cleansing

The ideal skin cleansing should be adapted to the individual skin type, the age, the condition of the skin and the degree of contamination of the skin.

For rather dry skin, it is recommended to take a shower only once a day and to be reserved with bathing. Soaps or other alkaline cleansers should be replaced with mild, moisturizing cleanser lotions and creams called syndets, which are adapted to the pH of the skin and less so to attack its acid mantle.

Free radicals - cell killers for the skin

Free radicals - also called oxidants - are parts of molecules (eg of oxygen) that occur in the organism and have become very reactive due to external influences such as nicotine, air pollutants or heavy metals.

This means they are constantly looking for other chemicals they can connect to. They attack collagen, cell membrane and the lipid layer of the skin.

Normally the body protects the cells against these aggressors by highly active molecular compounds - so-called radical scavengers or antioxidants. If these substances are not present in sufficient numbers or free radicals increase, cells are destroyed and those who survive can not regenerate fast enough and age prematurely. These processes are particularly evident on the skin: accelerated skin aging, premature wrinkling and tired and loose skin.

Hope from pot and potty

With promises such as "cell-active, " "moisturizing, " "nourishing, " "pore-refining, " "revitalizing, " the cosmetics industry makes billions in sales year after year. The miracle cure, which allows eternally young appearance, but there is not. However, with a healthy lifestyle, balanced nutrition and a targeted, consistent care can delay the appearance of aging.

A day cream is used to protect the skin from dehydration and harmful substances. For this, the cream must provide it with moisture and fat and help the skin to store these substances. Since UV radiation is one of the most aggressive enemies of the skin, the day cream should also contain a UV filter with a sun protection factor of at least four.

The purpose of the night cream is to support the skin during recovery and regeneration and should therefore contain a great deal of nutrients and moisture.

What works like in skincare products?

Many substances in skin care products are known by name, which is hidden behind the name, but is often unknown. Here is a list of common drugs:

  • AHA acids (alpha hydroxy acids) are natural fruit and lactic acids from grapes, apples, olives, lemons and milk. They penetrate the skin particularly well and accelerate cell renewal. The skin looks fresher and smoother. In the connective tissue, they can positively influence the collagen. Because of their strong irritant effect AHA acids in higher doses may only be used by experienced beauticians.
  • Antioxidants are mainly included in moisturizers, makeup and sun creams. These vitamins - beta carotene, vitamins C and E - are designed to counteract free radical damage that causes the sun, pollutants and cigarette smoke.
  • Beta hydroxy acids are closely related to the AHA acids, the most well known is salicylic acid. It acts as a scavenger and relaxes blackheads.
  • Ceramides are lipids that are used in skin creams. They are an important building material in the fat of the horny layer and form a protective film that makes the skin more resistant.
  • Enzymes are found mainly in moisturizers and masks. Enzyme-based scrubs are natural ingredients that gently and thoroughly remove dead cells from the skin surface without damaging or irritating the living cells.
  • Hyaluronic acid is an active substance that the body also forms itself. It can store a lot of moisture. Hyaluronic acid care products are suitable for mature and dry skin.
  • Collagen / elastin are important elements in the supportive structure of the skin, making it elastic and supple. Collagen creams and masks can moisturize the skin surface.
  • Liposomes are so fine that they can penetrate into deeper skin layers and transport active ingredients such as collagen.
  • Panthenol / Pro-Vitamin B5 is a special form of Vitamin B5. It can store moisture. For skin irritation and sunburn, it has a calming effect and is therefore included in many skin care products and après-sun lotions.
  • Retinol (Vitamin A), which is contained in a number of moisturizers, presumably oxidizes to retinolic acid on the skin. This in turn is intended to delay or reverse some of the signs of aging caused by exposure to light.
  • Oxygen contained in skin care products is said to boost cell activity and renewal at the skin surface. It is best to oxygenate the skin with a brisk walk.
  • Urea - urea - is one of the active ingredients that can bind moisture and promote healing.
