Cessation of hearing: causes and treatment

Every year, more than 15, 000 people in Germany suffer from a hearing loss - a sudden loss of hearing. Most of the time, the hearing loss is limited to one ear, but can also affect both ears. Frequently the hearing loss is accompanied by ear noises (tinnitus). Less common are dizziness and pressure in the ear.

Causes of a hearing loss

There is still uncertainty about the exact causes of the disease. It is believed that the blood supply in the inner ear is disturbed. Thus, the auditory cells can no longer function.

The cause of such a circulatory disorder may be embolism, high or low blood pressure, coagulation disorders or vascular changes due to diabetes. However, such a connection has not been proven so far.

Mental causes and stress in work and family are considered as well. The release is also suspected by certain viruses that affect the hearing and balance nerves.

In case of acute react quickly!

The treatment is: The sooner the better! If you have an acute hearing loss, take it quickly to an ear, nose and throat doctor, so that the necessary treatment is initiated in good time.

In addition, the physician can distinguish a hearing loss from other possible causes of sudden hearing loss. These include, for example, a noise trauma, diseases such as Menière's disease, shingles with involvement of the ears, or earwax grafts.

Therapy: Promotion of circulation and rest

The correct procedure for the treatment of a hearing loss is highly controversial among physicians. The therapy of the hearing loss is usually similar to the treatment of acute noises. After examining the ear, you will usually receive circulation-enhancing infusions. This is to better care for the inner ear.

The treatment for circulatory disorders is only a first suspected diagnosis. This is why additional diagnostic steps often have to be carried out.

Further therapeutic measures

In the further treatment of an acute hearing loss, the focus is on rest and relaxation:

  • For treatment you are sometimes referred to a hospital. They thus gain distance from occupational or family burdens.
  • Calm and positive thoughts promote your self-healing process.
  • Tell your doctor if and which medications you are taking regularly. Certain preparations may have harmful effects on your hearing. Never stop taking medication without consulting your doctor.
  • Pay more attention to your well-being. Especially if you reduce your hearing loss due to overwork and stress. In order to better deal with stressful situations in the future, you should learn a relaxation method. This may be autogenic training, Jacobsen progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, tai chi or something similar.

For all patients there are therapeutic aids, special specialist clinics and self-help groups.

Prognosis in the case of a hearing loss

When treatment starts early, in most cases hearing can be fully restored.

In many cases, the hearing loss also fixes itself. However, it is never foreseeable whether a spontaneous healing begins. An immediate medical treatment is therefore highly recommended!

In some cases, hearing loss is retained after a hearing loss. Often, then, wearing a hearing aid helps with deafness and a cochlear implant. Sometimes a tinnitus remains, even after your hearing is restored.
